THE NCAA PUNISHES PENN STATE.

The Osgood File. Sponsored in part by Auto Owners Insurance, the No Problem People. Visit AutoOwners.Com. This is Charles Osgood.

The recent findings of former FBI Director Louis Freeh - commissioned with investigating the pedophile behavior of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, and the cover-up by Coach Joe Paterno and his superiors at the University - were the last straw, as far as the NCAA is concerned.

SOT - Mark Emmert, NCAA President
"This case involves tragic - and tragically unnecessary - circumstances." (:05)

NCAA President Mark Emmert came down hard on Penn State yesterday.

SOT - Mark Emmert
"The NCAA is imposing a fine of 60 million dollars on the university. This amount is the equivalent of one year's gross revenue of the football team." (:09)

And that's not all by any means, as you'll hear after this...

((( BREAK )))

Among the other punishments the NCAA has decided to impose...

SOT - Mark Emmert
"Penn State will be banned from Bowl games and any other postseason play for four years." (:06)

It's more than mere punishment, says Emmert.

SOT - Mark Emmert
"Our goal is not to be just punitive - but to make sure the university establishes an athletic culture and daily mindset in which football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people." (:13)

They could not erase the harm done.

SOT - Mark Emmert
"We've kept foremost in our thoughts the tragic damage that has been done to the victims and their families." (:06)

But they could erase from the record what Penn State had taken such pride in.

SOT - Mark Emmert
"The NCAA vacates all wins of the Penn State football team from 1998 to 2011, and the records will reflect these changes." (:08)

Maybe wins there were too important - maybe football there was too big.

SOT - Mark Emmert
"One of the grave dangers stemming from our love of sports is that the sports themselves can become too big to fail - indeed, too big to even challenge. The result can be an erosion of academic values that are replaced by the value of hero worship and winning at all costs." (:16)

Clearly, winning is not the only thing.
