A GRANDMA WHO PACKS A LOT FOR THE TROOPS.
The Osgood File. Sponsored in part by AJC. This is Charles Osgood.
For wounded American soldiers at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany, there's a place they soon find out about once they're on the mend.
Sort of a PX with a big difference, says our CBS News colleague Steve Hartman.
VO - Steve Hartman, CBS News Correspondent "This is where they can pick-up, for free, everything they need to make their stay more comfortable." (:06)
SOT - Col. Luke Pittman "It's a tremendous difference for their morale." (:02)
VO - Steve Hartman "Colonel Luke Pittman told us all this comes from donors - much of it, believe it or not, from a single donor in Virginia: a lone grandma in a two-car garage." (:09)
Steve went to see Grandma Karen Grimord in Stafford, Virginia.
You'll meet her, too - after this from David Harris of AJC...
((( BREAK )))
Want to meet a true patriot on this Fourth of July Eve?
Meet Karen Grimord...
VO - Steve Hartman "Every day - tape gun blazing - Karen Grimord does her part for the war on terror. She sent her first box eight years ago after seeing a public service announcement - and has been steadily ramping up her operation ever since, both in quantity and quality." (:15)
SOT - Karen Grimord "I figure if I don't want to use it here, they're not going to want to use it there." (:04)
She's become legendary, says Steve Hartman.
VO - Steve Hartman "Which is why, although it started with Landstuhl, Karen now gets requests from more than 150 combat hospitals, doctors and medics." (:08)
SOT - Karen Grimord, with Steve Hartman "(Hartman:) You can't say no. (Grimord:) No, we shouldn't say no. (Hartman:) But you can't say no! (Grimord, laughs:) I'm going to try, with every bone in my body - if it's on that wish list, I'm going to try and get it for 'em." (:11)
VO - Steve Hartman "To that end, Karen has sent more than 7,300 care packages. She spends 40,000 dollars a year on postage alone. And although she does have some financial supporters, they don't cover all the costs by any means." (:12)
A lot of people say "Support Our Troops"...
VO - Steve Hartman "Karen, on the other hand, is all in - and will be as long as there are injured soldiers in need of ... anything." (:06)
NAT - U.S. Soldiers "(Solder #1:) I'd just like to say, 'Thank you, Karen.' (Soldier #2:) Just, 'Thank you from the bottom of our heart.'" (:03)
SOT - Karen Grimord "You just have to remember their faces and who they are - and you pack another box." (:04)
