From time immemorial, Man has struggled to find some way to stop the hiccups.
Mallory Kievman may have solved that problem - Mallory is a 13-year-old girl.
Our CBS News colleague Terrell Brown was dispatched to Connecticut to check Mallory out.
More from him after this...
((( BREAK )))
Here's what 13-year-old Mallory Kievman told our Terrell Brown...
SOT - Mallory Kievman "A few summers ago, I was having some problems with the hiccups myself. Naturally, I really wanted them to stop, so I researched some rumored cures for hiccups..." (:08)
VO - Terrell Brown, CBS News Correspondent "Mallory decided to combine three of the ingredients that halted her own hiccups..." (:05)
SOT - Mallory Kievman "Sugar, water and the apple cider vinegar mix." (:04)
VO - Terrell Brown "...and came up with the 'Hiccupop.'" (:02)
Her process is not too complicated.
SOT - Mallory Kievman "It's pretty much just as simple as adding all these ingredients together and making them on the stove." (:04)
Terrell asked Mallory...
SOT - Mallory Kievman - with Terrell Brown "(Brown:) How does it work? (Kievman:) The ingredients in the lollipop, we found, overstimulate a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc." (:08)
Mallory seems pretty entrepreneurial for a 13 year old.
NAT - Mallory Kievman at a meeting "There's a lot of potential markets we can go into with this..." (:03)
But she doesn't want to bring down the wrath of the Federal Government...
VO - Terrell Brown "Curing the hiccups is not a claim Mallory is ready or even authorized by the FDA to make." (:06)
SOT - Mallory Kievman "We can't say 'This cures the hiccups' - we can't say that this does something for certain bodily function." (:08)
VO - Terrell Brown "Instead, it will be marketed as a candy." (:02)
So much for hiccup curing. Our Terrell Brown tried the candy...
NAT - Terrell Brown, with Mallory Kievman "(Brown:) Not bad. I like it. It tastes just like normal candy. (Kievman:) Yeah, that's the good part so far ... We need the market research to support the overall business..." (:10)
Maybe she should go public - get me Morgan Stanley on the phone!
